It has been a wonderful start to our school year and what a privilege it is for me to be working with all the wonderful children. The children love carpet time and this is where I have very much enjoyed getting to know each and everyone. It is always such a pleasure to learn what makes them unique and special. Many of the new children are so very proud to know the words to our little songs and it is so wonderful to hear their little voices sing. All our new little children have settled into a wonderful routine. They have been presented with all new lessons in the practical life and several in Sensorial. We have also ventured a little bit into math, language, and geography. Practical life is a wonderful way for the children to learn the classroom routine. They soon learn that the classroom belongs to them, they have many choices of work and we also learn to slow our bodies down, by walking with a tray that might contain glass. We learn that cleaning up is part of finishing the work that you have chosen to do. In math we have introduced the number zero and 1. We have learned that zero means nothing. We concentrate on teaching the children the quantity together with what the number looks like. In Language we have introduced the sound m and a. When introducing sounds to our children we concentrate on the actual sound the letter makes instead of referring to the sound in its capital form. We find by teaching the children the sound a letter makes, sets our children up for reading success. We have discovered that planet Earth consist of 3 elements, Water, land and air. We have also touched on the seven continents.
